Eyes of the (Fish) Skin

2020
Bioplastic on wire mesh

The Eyes of the (Fish) Skin is a meditative retreat, where one can seek refuge from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives. This project challenges the notion of how architecture responds to the weather and its surroundings. Using bioplastic as out main material due to its translucency which allows a play of light, and nature of it being susceptible to water, we have created a dynamic structure which changes over time and reacts to its environment.

Material exploration

We began exploring different methods of combining two materials together. Through our process, we decided to delve deeper into creating bioplastics.

Eventually, a bioplastic material, made from tapioca flour, was chosen. It had unique properties, such as transparency and being susceptible to water.

A meditative retreat

The structure acts as a personal sanctuary, providing a comfortable environment for one to carry out meditative activities, such as reading, playing the guitar, or practicing yoga. Over time, the holes formed unexpectedly in the bioplastic enable the play of shadow within the structure. More enclosed areas allow a slight reverberation due to its curvature, introducing interesting acoustic qualities.

Owing to the dynamic nature of the structure, the user comes back to a new space each time and responds to it by finding the most suitable spot to carry out their activity. This exploration results in the user finding unexpectedly pleasant and intriguing spaces.
